Direct Hire

Employment arrangement where a company hires an employee directly onto their own payroll without using a staffing agency or intermediary.

General

Direct hire means the employer recruits and employs workers directly rather than through an agency. The company is the legal employer, responsible for all employment obligations. This contrasts with temporary staffing, contract arrangements, or using an Employer of Record.

Advantages

Direct hiring typically creates stronger employee loyalty and engagement, gives full control over compensation and benefits design, builds company culture more effectively, and avoids ongoing fees to intermediaries. For permanent positions where commitment is desired, direct hire often makes sense.

Requirements

Direct hiring requires legal capacity to employ in the relevant jurisdiction. This means having a local entity or using a structure that allows direct employment. The company must handle all employment compliance, payroll, benefits, and administration.

When EOR Is Better

Direct hire is not always possible or practical. Without a local entity, companies cannot hire directly in most countries. Even with entities, small teams may not justify the compliance overhead. EOR provides an alternative that achieves similar outcomes without entity requirements.
